I think that's about as short as I can get it and still have it do what I want.

Raise your hand if this is big, fat pain in the ass. Most notably:Another change you may notice this evening is that you will only see public entries when viewing another user's friends page. Also, some people are complaining about the scalability and side-effects of the new cookie scheme. I haven't had the time to investigate this personally, but I am getting tired of being logged out by surprise.

| For Science! |
[10 Nov 2005|06:40pm] |
A friend of mine is studying at the University of California at Riverside. He needs to get a couple hundred people to take these two quizzes. He plans to use the collected data to quantify some ideas about depths of knowledge and types of learning. Each quiz takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on how fast you go. If you want, you can just take one of the two.
Two caveats: - Please take each quiz at most once! Repeating a quiz would spoil the data. (If you want, you can just take one of the two quizzes.
- Please answer honestly and do not use any outside references. He's not interested in how well you can use Google. Don't let it get to you if you don't know the answers. The questions cover a wide range of topics and some of them are pretty tough!
If you feel like it, post a link to these quizzes in your journal. It is, after all, for the good of science.
Quiz me for science!

| Three-way Signal |
[02 Nov 2005|08:56pm] |
What does the sign "Three-way Signal" mean at an intersection?
What does it mean when it is posted facing oncoming traffic?
What does it mean when it is posted facing cross traffic?
What does it mean when it is posted facing both oncoming traffic and cross traffic?
What assumptions do you, as a driver, make about intersections bearing these cryptic placards?
I have my own theories, but I want to hear what you all have to say about the matter.

| Google "Cube needs" Meme |
[19 Oct 2005|10:29pm] |
I don't do play along memes very often, but with my nickname, this one might be interesting. With only a modicum of cheating:
Cube needs Java.
Cube needs to be disassembled.
Cube needs to refine his screenwriting skills a tad.
Cube needs two serial ports.
Cube needs to move and rotate.
Cube needs better games.
Cube needs to be analyzed.
Cube needs to see up, not out.
Cube needs to grow quickly to keep up with the demands of a downsizing, outsourcing federal bureaucracy.
Cube needs mood lighting.
Cube needs to come in contact with as much egg matter as possible.

Speakeasy called.
They said that the FCC requires that I submit to some sort of third party verification regarding the idiosyncrasies of 911/E911 over VoIP. I need to acknowledge a bunch of stuff such as, "if the power goes out, 911 service will be unavailable." They told me that if I don't complete this process by midnight tonight, they'll be forced to perform a "soft disconnect" of my VoIP service.
What is a "soft disconnect" the astute reader might ask? When they perform a soft disconnect, all of your phone services are disabled, with one notable exception. The only number I would still be able to dial would be 911.

| Fire Alarm |
[20 Sep 2005|11:03am] |
There really is nothing like rain water dripping down into the building and setting off the fire alarm.
Now it's time to figure out how to evacuate past all this construction.
Update: So, it turns out that due to construction, the "official" fire evacuation route is closed. Fortunately, the "official" route is also the "braindead" route, but my personal preferred route is also closed now. I'm not really sure how I would try to get out if this building were really going to catch fire.

Speakeasy VoIP vs. Vonage
Price-wise, they're almost the same. Feature-wise there are some potentially important differences. Anyone what to weigh in?
I'm interested in how you all might make a case one way or the other. I have some opinions on the two, but I haven't made up my mind just yet. I'm also open to other VoIP options, but I'm planning to pick one of the above fairly shortly.

| Tandem Parking Question |
[14 Jul 2005|07:11pm] |
My sister is looking for an apartment and she found a one bedroom that shares a tandem parking space with another unit.
Does anyone have any experience with sharing a tandem spot with a random neighbor? If so, how did it work out? Did you exchange keys so that you could switch cars? Were their problems? Would you do it again? What about when you have guests park in the tandem spot? Anything else?

What would be on the playlist for the ceremony?
What would be on the playlist for during the cocktail hour and dinner?
What would be on the playlist for dancing? for the toast? for the cake cutting? for the accessory tossing?
